*****The title track, "Extraordinary Machine" is an elated celebration of self-acceptance. "I'm good at being uncomfortable" Fiona confidently declares in the first verse. With a melody reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald's "Mr. Paganini" and Jon Brion's Tin Pan Alley instrumentation, this is unquestionably Fiona Apple's prettiest song to date but don't expect sentimentality; it is also one of her most honest and well-realized.

*****"Better Version of Me" is driven by jungle percussive beats a la When the Pawn's "Fast As You Can." They push forward a harmonic structure more complex, feverish, and demented than anything we've heard by the artist before. The complicated mixture of madcap harmonic colors and thumping rhythms exudes an internal joy too pure to ignore the darker emotions that give happiness its weight and meaning. The lyric "Can't take a good day without a bad one," seems to directly assess this psychological dichotomy. The subdued vocals are both an asset and a hindrance as they free the melody but dilute the dialogue between audience and artist that typifies her music's charisma.
